GPS For Smartphones Blows Away Standalone GPS...
Whenever I drive, I use my iPhone as my car’s GPS system. I have my iPhone chilling in an iPhone dock that’s installed onto the center of my dash where it gets power and the audio is connected via Bluetooth. I have Navigon running as the GPS app (decked out with all the extras) and Spotify running in the background for music. The GPS signal works so well and I can even have people use...

If You Gotta' Smartphone, Use It The Smart Way
Tonight I went to a comedy club. Me ‘n’ my girl had like an hour before the show started. So what did we do? In between talking to ourselves, we had our Glif propping up my iPhone 4 and we watched new TV episodes of shows we love on Hulu Plus, sharing earbuds. Really helped us enjoy the atmosphere and the time flew by. Other people around us were either extremely bored or were...

QuasiDisk Allows Tethering For The iPhone Without... →
Another tethering app’s slipped past Apple’s approval process. Get this quick as Apple typically takes these apps off the App Store within a few hours. It’s only $1.99. This won’t work for Windows 7 apparently for the time being, it only works for OS X. But my advice is to buy it now so that if there’s a method to do this for Windows later, you’ll have the app....

My iPhone 4's Mic Won't Switch To External Mode No...
This means that I can’t do speakerphone or record audio for videos or do my awesome Talking Carl. There’s something physically wrong inside my phone that’s causing the mic to stay on the “hold the phone up to your face to speak” mode. It ain’t software as I’ve done a complete reset of all data and the phone still does it. Didn’t happen from damage or...

Petition Demands White House Investigate SOPA... →
Wow, wow, wow… Chris Dodd’s comments have backfired on him. “Don’t ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don’t pay any attention to me when my job is at stake.” He meant for his comments about the Obama administration to strike a cord into his reelection campaign, but ironically it’s the Obama...

SOPA Is Inevitable →
parislemon: Marco Arment has this exactly right. We may have beaten these variations of SOPA and PIPA, but the sad fact of that matter is that they — or something like them — will eventually pass.  Obviously, all things being equal, such bills should never pass. But all things aren’t equal. As with most things, this is actually all about money. The MPAA and the other content lobbies are going...

My iPhone 4's External Mic Is Messed Up
Damn, my iPhone 4 (the Neocell) developed a problem today. The external mic is muffled (damn near not working). Noticed it today when trying to use the speaker phone. Ugg. It ain’t from no damage or nothin’, just started outta’ the blue.  Gonna’ head down to the Apple Store to see what’s up, but apparently they’ll turn me away as their “genius bar”...

On Kodak's Bankruptcy: Good Riddance
Good riddance… But na, on a more serious note… good riddance. I kid, I kid… In all seriousness… good riddance Kodak. Your had your moment in the sun for decades upon decades and you drove countless camera start-ups and competitors out of business with dirty tactics and your name brand alone and were hanging around long after your usefulness was clearly obsolete. Your latest patent attacks on...

The RIAA Gets The Feds To Shutdown Megaupload →
Oh the irony. Right when it looks like our blackout movement has defeated, or at least crippled, the RIAA and MPAA’s SOPA and PIPA pet projects, the RIAA managed to get Megaupload shutdown! Thank goodness for Anonymous yo, they did a denial of service attack on the RIAA causing their web site to be temporarily “shutdown”. Good job Anonymous. JbB

How Google Has Lost Control Of Android →
Pretty insightful post. Don’t agree with every facet, but the picture painted is pretty clear. What’s not clear is what will happen to Android once the “point of no return” has been reached. Instead of “Google has lost control”, I actually see it as “How Google is now stuck designing Android for life” type of thing. Even if… at some point,...

SOPA and PIPA Cause Me Personal Headaches
Man… I’m in full support of the protest of SOPA and PIPA. In fact, right now AintAGeek.com is blacked out in protest of SOPA and PIPA, just like Reddit and Wikipedia are. But I’m having to write a paper for somethin’ and… low-and-behold, I needed to access Wikipedia for some research. But boom… Wikipedia’s blacked out still. This is exactly what Wikipedia...

Wikipedia and Reddit Preparing To Blackout
Starting to see notices on certain web sites, such as Wikipedia and Reddit, that they’ll be blacking themselves out in protest of SOPA. Good for them. There needs to be a lot more awareness of SOPA and PIPA and simply putting little announcements here and there won’t have as great of an effect as blacking out your web site (while explaining to visitors why it’s happening). Consumer Innovation Trumps Business Innovation
What’s really funny here is the fact that these companies are wanting to adopt iPads (the article says “tablets”, but come on, it’s iPads) and are leading the change rather than their IT departments.  Small and mid-sized businesses planning tablet buying spree This… this… is what I love about this new “consumer-based” technology revolution. Never...

Android Developer Explains Fragmentation For... →
To me, development for Android seems to be a horrible mess. I can only feel what coders must have to go through making apps for so many different devices. And the same for users… “This app don’t work!” and someone else would say “Works fine in my device.”. Just one of the many reasons why I love iOS and having an iPhone. JbB

I Don't Wanna' Give Fixes, I Wanna' Give Thoughts
AintAGeek.com used to use Wordpress as its CMS installed on a server of mine. But then I decided to make the move to Tumblr. Tumblr is a service that hosts everything on their own end, even if you use your own domain name. That’s cool, I respect that, but it means that nothing else can be used for that domain name besides email. This sucks because it means I can’t create an...

The Pirate Bay's Gonna' Use Magnet Links Only →
What’s interesting about this is that the entire web site, come in a month or so, will be small enough to backup to a flash drive. You know, for countries that happen to block access to The Pirate Bay, they’d be able to access the magnet links locally (it’s more complex than that, but you get the idea). Too cool. JbB

Content "Creep" →
What a good read about content and how companies view their audience. This has been a growing tend for online “content” companies to care more about metrics and less about content. I’m sick of news articles that read like “Apple does [insert thing] that may lead to [insert thing].”, and you click on it and it’s a short article and 20% talks about the actual...

So with the coverage at CES (which I’m purposely trying to ignore), there’s talks of SmartTV’s and all this jazz. …Wait, what is a SmartTV? Well it’s pretty stupid, a SmartTV is any TV that can run apps. …That’s it. Some of you might be thinking that’s a pretty amazing thing, compared to what TVs can do now. But it’s really not. For...

Havin' Fun Creating A Design For The Site
I was worried when I saw Tumblr designs that designing for Tumblr was gonna’ be crappy… But I’m able to work in the design I had for the Wordpress-driven aintageek.com for this new Tumblr driven one. Moving From Wordpress To Tumblr
I’ve been way more active on Google+ than my own blog web sites over the past few months. The reason is because I get way more feedback with Google+ than I did using Wordpress. I’d get a lot of traffic and visits, but not much interaction via comments and damn near zero activity from Twitter, even though I had links to my Twitter account everywhere. It’s not to say people...
